Department of Education Announces New "Reading First" Web Site

The U.S. Department of Education's new Reading First web site, http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/readingfirst/, offers information on the Department's ambitious national effort to help every child become a successful reader. The site includes a description on how the program will work (every state has the potential to receive Reading First grants; states will award sub-grants to local communities on a competitive basis), an estimated timeline for distribution of state funds (applications published April 1), and links to reading reports and related associations and organizations. An Early Reading First web site (www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/earlyreading/), summarizing the competitive grant program to develop and support the school readiness of pre-school-aged children, is also nearly complete. Both initiatives are run out of the Department's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, which has compiled a comprehensive list of reading resources at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/reading_resources.html.

Consumers’ Guide to Reading Programs
Available For Ohio Schools

Columbus -- Selecting a reading program to meet the specific literacy needs of a school building or district in Ohio became easier today for educators with the release of a one-stop, web-based report, Choosing a Reading Program: A Consumer’s Guide.

Funded by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and available soon on the Web, The Guide is an evaluation of 21 commonly used programs that emphasize reading improvement. The downloadable 87-page document is a summary of a 500-page report funded through the Reading Excellence Act (U.S. Department of Education) and supported by OhioReads. The report presents research on reading programs conducted by P. David Pearson of Michigan State University and Steven Stahl of the University of Georgia.

The programs represent a variety of approaches to literacy development. The summary contains information about the components of the reading program, instructional models and curriculum content. Additionally, the Guide contains comments and ratings that evaluate each program’s adequacy on characteristics of effective literacy development.

The Consumers’ Guide is designed to help school principals and reading faculty in school districts identify programs that they would like to investigate further.

The April edition of Council of Chief State School Officers Newsletter contains an article on the importance of teaching reading to middle school students that is within their respective content areas. Researchers suggest that in an attempt to respond to the problem of poor reading skills among middle school students, educators focus on decoding skills without moving students beyond decoding to address their problems in areas such as comprehension. Learn about reading initiatives undertaken by school districts around the country to teach reading at the middle school level.
