CARING – Review of Challenge Point 2 Responses

Why do Elaine and Jeannie care about the perceived student discipline problem at Eagle School?

Yes, these are truthful statements about why Jeannie and Elaine should care that Eagle could be developing a serious student discipline problem.
These statements are most likely the only reasons that these educators have in common to care about the situation, and therefore a good rallying point for teambuilding--absolutely essential if they are to resolve the problem.
By themselves, however, they don’t possess enough of the ’what’s in it for me’ to serve as motivators for caring enough to take action.

The situation is volatile--but not quite at the explosive point. Educators’ jobs are always on the line. So what else is new about the profession of teaching? Pink slips always are a possibility, but the fear of being fired over this incident isn’t a strong motivator—unless Elaine and Jeannie know something we don’t yet know.
You also might say that they know the school business well enough to realize that working in K-12 education can be precarious for any number of reasons—not just in times of crisis.

Of all the options, you would be closest to the mark by choosing this one. Change theory researchers point out that the work force no longer is one homogeneous monolith. What motivates the older, more traditional segment of the workforce to care about what they do at work may have little influence on members of other segments.
What rings your chimes? What causes you to care about what you do on the job? And remember, a satisfier may not be a motivator.

So, what do you think? How close did your views come to any of the above?
