Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland

Anne Arundel County Public Schools LogoDisproportionality, in the form of overrepresentation of African American students in special education, is an area of great concern in the district. This concern is also mirrored at the school level. Anne Arundel County Schools has a Disproportionality Action Team that meets two hours bi-monthly. As a result of these meetings, the team forwarded recommendations to the superintendent and the associate superintendent, who mandated that disproportionality would be a priority focus for the district. Although the school improvement team did not include disproportionality in its school improvement plan last year, it will begin addressing disproportionality this coming school year.

In keeping with the district's mandate, the school participates in the Maryland State Disproportionality Conference held annually. On advisement from EMSTAC, the school is considering an intervention for disproportionality that is a proactive approach focusing on cohorts of students. In the meantime, the Linking Agent is involved in discussions with the Technical Assistance Liaison to gain more information about maximizing the benefits of such a model for the school's student population. Additionally, the Linking Agent is seeking external funds to assist with implementing this proactive approach for reducing disproportionality.
