Los Angeles Unified School District, California
Los
Angeles Unified School District is implementing the Peer-Assisted
Learning Strategies (PALS) program. PALS is a peer-guided, collaborative
reading strategy that aims to increase reading fluency and comprehension.
Student pairs take turns orally reading designated text. While one
student reads, the other student records the number of words read
and points out any words read incorrectly. After reading the text,
each student is required to summarize what he or she has read and
report the main idea of the passage.
To
support the implementation of PALS, the LA conducted several in-service
training sessions with the teachers, in which he modeled the strategy
for them. Because the Linking Agent lives at a distance from the
school district, he comes to the site for about a week once a month.
During that time, he works individually with the teachers, helping
them problem solve; conducts booster sessions; and answers questions.
When he is not on-site, he is available to the teachers by e-mail
and speaks to the principal at least one or twice a week. The Linking
Agent's work has resulted in several teachers' regularly implementing
PALS in their classrooms.
