During
the first year of involvement with Emstac, this district identified
the need for improved schoolwide discipline programs, particularly
in the district's largest school. The Boys Town method is currently
being implemented to address these issues. School administrators
received training in the Boys Town method in Nebraska during the
summer 1999. A Boys Town trainer then came to the school in the
fall to train several teachers. This group included some teachers
who had served on the selection committee that chose the intervention,
but most of the teachers had not. The teachers on the selection
committee were mostly grades 7 and 8 teachers, and the teachers
implementing Boys Town are primarily grade 3-6 teachers representing
17 classrooms in the school.
This
school year will be the first complete year of implementation of
the program at one of the schools. Teachers are currently implementing
the lessons and teaching 16 social skills over 16 weeks. The school's
disciplinarian has been leading this effort at the school level.
She has decided that rather than expand to new classrooms next year,
the program will target the third-grade classrooms for more intense
implementation and training in additional techniques. It is her
goal for all current teachers to delve deeper into the program.
