THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK

You may feel the temptation to take on the whole change process yourself. However, by taking the entire innovation onto your own shoulders, you run the risk of not only carrying too much of the burden of change, but also discouraging other school personnel from claiming ownership in the innovation process.

Whether you assemble your team in your school, or district, or work with an existing team, consider the skill mix and diverse representation of the members, and establish good relationships with all team members.

Collaborative teamwork results in:

  • Shared expertise and support
  • Personal growth
  • Shared accountability
  • FUN!

Effective teams have process expertise and encompass numerous attributes.

  • Effective interpersonal communication
  • An understanding of group processes
  • Leadership
  • Collaborative problem-solving
  • Conflict management
  • Trust and rapport
  • Team identity with common mission and goals
  • Ability to address organizational barriers/logistical problems
