To effectively bring about change, it is important for you personally as a Linking Agent to have successful relationships with not only the people on your team, but those in your school and district. Below we list eight principles to consider.
PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESSFUL LINKING AGENT RELATIONSHIPS
- Reciprocity: Both parties are able to give and take in the relationship.
- Openness: Both parties are willing to receive new inputs from each other.
- Realistic expectations: The Linking Agent should set reasonable/ realistic expectations from the outset. Do not oversell yourself or the innovation.
- Expectations of reward: Likewise, do not set expectations too low because it is equally important to give the client some reason for optimism, an idea of how much better things might be if the innovation is successful.
- Structure: Successful relationships must have some structural basis, some definition of roles, working procedures, the flow and integration of tasks and responsibilities, and expected outcomes.
- Equal power: When there is an unequal distribution of power, the appearance of change may be brought about by the compliance of the weaker partner without the commitment necessary for lasting change.
- Minimum threat: The very idea of change is threatening to most of us, particularly when presented by someone who is an "outsider" such as a research consultant. In most respects, many of us are comfortable with our world pretty much the way it is, and see change as potential disturbance before seeing potential benefits. It is important, then, that the Linking Agent do whatever possible to minimize the perception of threat.
- Confrontation of differences: Linking Agents and co-workers should have the ability to talk out their differences. They must be open with one another about matters that disturb them about their relationship. The Linking Agent must relate not only to colleagues, but also to those in the school building/school district/community who are influenced by the change.
