Barbara
Dole Acosta works as a Technical Assistance Liaison with the Elementary
and Middle Schools Technical Assistance Center. She received a B.A.
in Psychology from Antioch College, an MS Ed. in TESOL from the
University of Pennsylvania, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in
Bilingual/Multicultural Education from George Mason University.
In
addition to her technical assistance work for EMSTAC, Barbara also
supports several other projects to link research to practice. She
is responsible for reviewing current educational research to create
products useful to practitioners in schools and classrooms, as well
as to policy makers. In this role, Ms. Acosta has co-authored web
pages, fact sheets and other publications regarding effective instructional
practices for English language learners with disabilities, behavioral
management systems, and the use of technology to teach reading and
writing to students who are disabled and to students who are deaf
and hearing impaired.
Prior
to coming to AIR, Ms. Acosta lived and worked in El Salvador, where
she spearheaded several educational initiatives. She was a founder
of the Centro de Educación para el Desarrollo Rural (Center
of Education for Rural Development), and of the Oscar Arnulfo Romero
University in northern El Salvador. Ms. Acosta has worked in a number
of settings as an English as a second language (ESL) teacher for
secondary public school students and international pre-university
students. She is bilingual in Spanish and English.
