  • Student Population Information
    Age/grade levels of students:
There are two programs, Phonics Based Reading (designed for students kindergarten through third grade) and Strategies for Older Students (designed for students from the fourth grade to adult).
    Applicability to Students with Disabilities:
Dyslexic students, and learning disabled populations
Can be used with general education or special education populations

  • Setting
    Classroom program or School-wide program:
Mostly used per classroom, but it can be purchased to support an unlimited number of users.

  • Synopsis of Program

    • Phonics Based Reading (K-3)
This program begins by teaching the student the sounds of vowels and single-syllable words; advancing to more difficult concepts and words as the student masters easier concepts. Students begin to build a working sight word vocabulary (using over 2,000 words). The program features an automatic branching function with an additional 'loop-back' function that allows the computer to repeat exercises if students fail to demonstrate mastery of a concept on a latter tria
    • Reading Strategies for Older Students (4th-adult)
Begins similar to the Phonics Based Reading program. This program initially focuses on vowel sounds and single syllable words, but attempts to quickly advance the student into more challenging material. It also features the automatic branching function but not the looping function. The Reading Strategies for Older Students is also paced a little faster than the Phonic Based Reading program; and covers over 3,000 words including three syllable words.

  • Other Features
    • The program keeps track of student performance, individually and compared to the rest of the class. Teachers and students can use these reports to track performance.
    • Claims to be effective for multiple settings, and for multiple needs (ESL, limited reading skills, etc.)
    • Features an automatic branching function that makes the program progressively more difficult as the student masters new skills. Teachers can disable the branching function if it is determined that the student needs additional time on a particular skill.
    • There are "Quick Reading Tests" that are available that assess the students strengths and weaknesses.

  • Considerations
    • Extensive references…comes highly recommended…includes links to references
    • Widely-used in school districts
    • Able to customize instruction…the program moves at the child's pace and the teacher is able to move the child back or forward according to the student's progress and the classroom goals.
    • Can be easily integrated into the curriculum.
    • Does not require that children be pulled out of class.
    • Requires that classrooms or resource persons have a computer.
    • Would be expensive to integrate across a system?

  • Suggestions/Additional Information/Prerequisite Materials and/or Facilities
    • Be aware that this is not intended to replace direct instruction. The Lexia software is designed to be a supplementary tool.
    • Schools need to have computers, staff knowledgeable in computers, or the technological capabilities necessary to support the network version?

  • Miscellaneous
    • Multi-award winning program:
Award of Excellence: Children's Software Review
District's Choice Award: Curriculum Administrator Magazine
Honored as one of the top 100 products of the year
Two Gold Medal Awards: Kid's Domain (educational review web-site)
    • Received initial fund through grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD)
    • Met the standards set in the National Research Council report, "Preventing Reading Difficulties in Children"
    • Their web site, www.lexialearning.com, provides extensive references for their product. This includes links to the sites that reviewed their products and presented them with awards and a listing of other large school systems that have purchased the program.
