    • "Sensational Strategies for Teaching Beginning Readers"
      Parent training program
      (items include):
      • Training Manual
      • Instructional video: provides two demonstration lessons
      • Supplemental materials (handwriting guide, flashcards, pictures, etc.
      • Provides basic reading instruction to parents. This includes training in phonics, and multi-sensory procedures, and sequential, cumulative learning.

    • Staff Development. The IMSE will provide a staff development program that incorporates the following components:
      • An Overview: Provides participants with information on the multi-sensory, balanced approach to reading instruction, a synthesis of current research, and how to integrate the Orton-Gillingham principles into their pre-existing program.
      • Intensive Training Program (16 hours): During this portion of the training, teachers will become more familiar with the Orton-Gillingham philosophy and accompanying strategies. Supplemental materials are provided.
      • Comprehensive Program (30 hours): Thoroughly explains the method, and how to make it work for their population. The teachers will learn more about phonemic awareness, and the most effective exercises to use with their students. Supplemental materials are provided.
      • Classroom Consultation: A three-hour classroom consultation is provided to demonstrate these methods.
      • Refresher Workshop

    • The IMSE specializes in delivering on-site training and staff development
    • The IMSE can tailor the staff development to fit the specific needs and population of the school. Training is available and appropriate for administrators, paraprofessionals, general education teachers, and special education teachers.
    • There are three ways to receive the training:
      Go to the Detroit central site
      Go to a site in your region
      Arrange for the training to take place at your school
